NOTOX @ WC9, Prague

The Biennial World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in Life Sciences took place on the 24th-28th August 2014 in Prague, Czech Republic. The Congress program included scientific and social aspects including lectures, scientific sessions and poster viewings over a four day period. Lectures covered a wide range of topics such as animal welfare, alternatives to testing and the use of animals in drug development, all with the intention of furthering the step toward ‘Humane science in the 21st Century’.

Among the attendees was Prof. Elmar Heinzle, coordinator of NOTOX, who notably presented a poster outlining their work on ‘2D and 3D human liver cell bioreactors for long-term repeated-dose toxicity testing as a basis for computer-aided prediction’.  In a further session, the newly published SEURAT-1 Annual Report Volume 4 was presented. The report provides a comprehensive overview about developments ultimately targeting the replacement of animal tests in the field of repeated dose systemic toxicity assessment. Download versions of the book are now available online. Print versions  can be ordered on the SEUART-1 website.

The World Congress was thrilled with proceedings and the feedback submitted to the WC9 was of overall positivity.
